Message From the General Manager
Winter has arrived in the Drakensberg, and we have already received our first light dusting of snow on the main escarpment — with hopes of more to come. Guests can follow Snow Report on social media for the latest updates, or enjoy the view of Cathedral Peak via the webcam on our website.
The season brings crisp mountain walks, cosy fireside evenings, hearty meals, spectacular sunrises, and golden sunsets that are best enjoyed with a drink at Albert’s Bar. Blooming Aloes attract beautiful sunbirds and sugarbirds, while our guided Tuesday bird-watching walk offers guests the chance to enjoy the area’s rich birdlife.
As part of seasonal mountain management, firebreak burning may take place sporadically in the surrounding area. Notices will be placed on our activity boards to advise guests of any affected routes or walks that may be temporarily closed.
With school holidays underway, our daily entertainment programme offers fun for all ages, from tractor and pony rides to table tennis competitions, guided walks, movies, arts and crafts, quizzes and more.
We look forward to welcoming you to the heart of the mountains this winter.

Lemon Tree Orchard
We are in the process of transforming a section of our old vegetable garden into a thriving lemon tree orchard, forming part of our journey towards more sustainable, homegrown experiences.
Soon, these lemons will make their way from tree to table — a little taste of Cathedral Peak, grown right here.
Meet Popcorn and New England Abyss
We are delighted to welcome two new members to the Cathedral Peak Hotel family: Popcorn and New England Abyss.
Both are settling in beautifully at the stables. Popcorn is already winning hearts with her charming personality and friendly presence, while New England Abyss, a gorgeous Nooitgedachter mare from New England Stud Farm, brings her own sweet nature and lovely temperament.
We can’t wait for guests to meet them on their next visit.

Our team recently attended WTM Africa and Africa’s Travel Indaba, where we connected with industry professionals and proudly showcased what makes Cathedral Peak Hotel such a distinctive Drakensberg destination.
These events remain an important highlight on our calendar, and we are already looking forward to next year.
Proud Supporters of the Hill’s 1000 Paws Walk
We were honoured to support this year’s Hill’s 1000 Paws Walk at Highgate Wine Estate, in aid of the Mooi River & District, uMngeni and Pietermaritzburg SPCA branches with a two-night stay for two as the first prize in the raffle.
Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to the organisers, volunteers, other sponsors, and everyone who made the day such a success. We look forward to supporting this special cause again next year.

The Drakensberg Mountains, locally known as uKhahlamba, meaning “Barrier of Spears,” stretch over 1 000km along the eastern edge of South Africa and are home to the country’s highest peaks. Often called the “Dragon Mountains” due to their jagged, spear-like ridges and misty valleys, the range is a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, and cultural enthusiasts alike.
