In Memoriam
Fenella Susan Lawrenson (née van der Riet)
02 August 1949 – 20 May 2025
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Fenella, beloved daughter of Albert and Doreen van der Riet, and sister to Irene, Helga, Sandra, Carolyn, and William.
Educated at St Anne’s Diocesan College and finishing school in Johannesburg, Fenella worked with publishern Russel Friedman before marrying Mike Lawrenson and becoming a devoted housewife. Together they shared memorable fishing trips with her father, Albert, to Mauritius and Alaska.
After her divorce, Fenella embraced a new chapter in the Eastern Cape, where alongside her sister Carol, Carol’s husband Nick, and their son Justin—she helped found the now world-renowned Sibuya Game Reserve. Her adventurous spirit took her across the globe: from safaris in Kenya and Namibia to expeditions through Antarctica, a journey along the Silk Road, where she and her elder sister Helga traveled by train across seven countries, and a horseback exploration of Chilean Patagonia.
In later years, Fenella found peace at Sibuya, enjoying the company of her beloved dogs, puzzles, and tennis, while always staying closely connected to the reserve’s life. Fenella was a kind, caring, and loving member of the family – sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend, with the utmost loyalty to all and her beloved Cathedral Peak Hotel and Sibuya Game Reserve.
She was the creator of beautiful, unique pots and baker of ‘THE FINEST’ Christmas cakes. Soar with the Eagles Nel – you’ll be sorely missed by us all.
May you rest in peace.
