Message From the General Manager

Autumn is in full swing at the hotel, with the trees turning beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red, wildflowers emerging and herds of Eland returning to the lower grounds. Clear skies, warm days and cooler nights make this the perfect time of year for enjoying all our hotel has to offer.

And before we know it, winter will be on our doorstep. Envisage sipping sherry in front of a log fire at Albert’s Bar, reading a good book in the lounge or enjoying our hearty winter buffets. Keep an eye on our social media pages or website for our Winter Special, which will be released later this month.

We are very excited to welcome all our guests joining us this Easter weekend. For those who will not be with us, we wish you a very happy and fun-filled Easter!

Meet the Cathedral Peak

Hotel team

We are so privileged to have such a wonderful team who work together to provide our guests with the ultimate Drakensberg experience!

Zama Zwane

Our Human Resources Administrator, Zama Zwane, has been working at the Hotel for 9 years. She started in the dining room and moved to Reservations whilst studying part-time, before taking up her current role in HR. Zama believes the hotel’s greatest strength is the good service provided by the staff. She loves watching the staff grow and eventually retire from the company after many years of service.

Martin Mpinga, Zinhle Mdluli, Eurnice Zimba and Mseshi Shabalala

Say hello to our cheerful and welcoming Head Waiters – Martin Mpinga, Zinhle Mdluli, Eurnice Zimba and Mseshi Shabalala! Our four Head Waiters are the friendly faces that greet you at the dining room entrance, check that the tables are always perfectly set and ensure that their waitering team provides you with the best possible service.

Pack for a Purpose campaign recipients

Thank you for helping us give back

A big thank you to all the guests who donated items as part of our Pack for a Purpose campaign over the festive season! These donations of much-needed stationery, combined with 40 school uniforms donated by Harvest Time Ministries, were distributed to a number of local schools in February this year.

Please continue to help us give back by finding some space in your suitcase for some sorely-needed supplies when you visit us next.

Lake Byron

Admire a spectacular autumn sunset

Go on an autumn afternoon adventure with our new complimentary guided sunset walk, happening every Saturday. Heading towards Lake Byron, you’ll meander along Ashlea’s Amble, following the Mhlonhlo River before re-joining the Doreen Falls path and turning right to Lake Byron, where herds of grazing eland can often be found.

This wonderful walk will reward you with magnificent views towards Cleft and the Cathedral Peak range, with an explosion of warm hues of reds, pinks and oranges as the sun begins to set.

The Cathedral Peak Hotel story continued

George Thompson built a house that would become the van der Riet family home then and now images

As it was still wartime and building permits were required, Albert and Doreen moved into the small cottage where Albert’s late father Philip had lived. Four years later, in 1947, George Thompson built a house that would become the van der Riet family home, opposite what is the children’s playground today. Last year, this home was lovingly restored by William van der Riet for his son, Byron, and his expanding family.
