THE CATHEDRAL FOUR
The Cathedral 4 Challenge is a fantastic achievement for any level of hiker. Complete 4 beautiful trails through the Drakensberg, from easy strolls to vigorous hikes, and receive the Cathedral 4 Award complete with a medal and certificate!
The 4 hikes can be done in any order over any period of time. Register at reception or with our entertainment team to qualify.
Time: 60 – 90 min
Difficulty: A (gentle)
This is the most frequently visited waterfall in the area, as it is easily accessible and provides a deep pool for swimming and a spacious shady spot for those hot summer days. For those prepared for a bit of a scramble, you can explore behind the falls, and a path leads up to a series of pools above the waterfall with some amazing views.
Time: 120 min
Difficulty: B (moderate)
This beautiful hike takes you to a shady indigenous forest with impressive ferns and tall yellowwood trees, spotted with a few natural pools. This walk requires crossing the Umlambonja River, which means getting your feet wet. After heavy rains, this crossing may become too high to cross safely, so please enquire at reception before embarking on this hike.
Time: 150 – 180 min
Difficulty: C (strenuous)
About 400m above the hotel stands the aptly-named Mushroom Rock, a bulbous formation on a ledge that offers some truly incredible views. It’s a steep uphill walk, but the path is clear and set with well-worn steps, and there is a short ladder climb. A short walk around the rock provides clear views of Cathedral Peak, the Bell and the Horns.
Time: 240 min
Difficulty: C (strenuous)
This intense uphill hike is not for the faint-hearted, but even the unfit will be able to manage if this is taken at a moderate pace. Sections of steep, precipitous edges and rock scrambles make for an interesting and challenging hike, but the view from the top is well worth the effort.
Once you’ve conquered the ‘berg with these 4 hikes, chat to reception or our entertainment team to claim your reward!
