Cathedral Peak Hotel was founded in 1939 by Albert van der Riet who had a dream of a tranquil and secluded hotel closer to the mountains than any other and offering visitors the ultimate Drakensberg experience. Over the past 81 years, we have grown our mountain retreat from a humble hotel to a 4-star premier accommodation, hospitality and entertainment destination fulfilling and surpassing our founder’s vision and legacy.
For the first time since the Hotel’s opening, we had to shut our doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The corridors, rooms and dining room of our expansive hotel emptied as our staff and guests left at the end of March for what would be an almost 6 month closure. There were periods when we were not sure we would make it through these very difficult times. But now we are finally able to welcome guests back to our gem of the mountains, offering the same exceptional service and entertainment that the hotel has become renowned for.
Remember when the partially-finished hotel opened with just 43 rooms built from stone and rock harvested from the surrounding hills? Today, guests are accommodated in 104 spacious and well-appointed rooms, ranging from standard and family rooms, to superior rooms, beautifully appointed Honeymoon Suites and our elegant Mponjwane Presidential Suite providing the ultimate in luxury for up to 254 guests.
Remember when evenings meant gathering around the wireless to listen to the news or listening to a gramophone and dancing by candlelight in the quaint hotel ballroom? Now, when the day is done, guests can relax and reminisce at Albert’s Cocktail Bar, or keep the party going long into the night at Harry’s Bar.
Unrivalled access to the Drakensberg Mountains sees 18 stunning walks and hikes leaving from the hotel, ranging from gentle riverside strolls to scaling the summit of the Cathedral Peak itself – many of which were first climbed decades ago by hikers leaving from our hotel. Nowadays, those looking for more speed can revel in mountain bike trails, jogging routes, horse rides, quad biking and our very own helicopter for nearby sightseeing flights.
Remember when our hotel grounds were a vast, untouched area bursting with potential? Today, the whole family can enjoy an incredible variety of sport in the sun right on the hotel grounds, with on-site facilities including tennis, beach volleyball, badminton and both heated and cool swimming pools. The crowning jewel is the hotel’s very own 9-hole golf course, with alternate tees for an 18-hole game, ranging a glorious 5542m through the valley and ending at a beautiful clubhouse with panoramic mountain views.
Remember when the hotel served a table d’hôte menu prepared by Abiziah the chef? Today, a team of top-class chefs ensure a delicious array of culinary delights, with extensive buffets at breakfast, lunch and dinner.
