Message from the General Manager

There’s something special about the Drakensberg at this time of year. The mountains are starting to come alive with beautiful greenery, the rains feed some spectacular waterfalls, and long, warm days make for the perfect summer holiday. From exploring the rich flora and fauna on a stunning early-morning hike, to taking in the sunset over the magnificent peaks from our restaurant terrace, Cathedral Peak Hotel is the perfect setting to experience a true Drakensberg summer.

September was especially special for us, with the first ever around-the-world Sri Chinmoy Peace Run stopping at Cathedral Peak Hotel. The Maloti-Drakensberg Park has been given the honour of being named a Sri Chinmoy International Peace Park and we are ecstatic to be a part of this amazing initiative.

The month of September also gave our staff the perfect excuse to celebrate their culture, with traditional singing and dancing
taking the forefront of our Heritage Day celebrations.

October saw much excitement with guests filling up the lounge and Harry’s Action Bar to watch the Rugby World Cup games.
We wish the Springboks all the very best for the upcoming final against England. Bring it home boys!

And so, the countdown to our 80th Festive Season has commenced. Menus are being planned, special treats are being ordered, entertainment programmes for adults and children alike are being arranged and the general hive of activity that precedes the Festive Season annually is well underway. It is at times like this, one really feels the
strength of the Cathedral Peak staff as each and every member proudly plays their role in
delivering the ultimate Drakensberg holiday experience to our guests.

For those of you who will not be able to join us for Christmas and/ or New Year, on behalf of the van der Riet Family, Management and staff of Cathedral Peak Hotel, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and Prosperous New Year!

Bruce Botes

Around-the-World Peace Run Passes
Through Cathedral Peak

Started by the late peace visionary Sri Chinmoy in 1987, the Peace Run is a global torch relay that embodies humanity’s universal aspiration for peace. The Peace Torch has been blessed and held by Pope Francis, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandela and many more.

On Friday the 20th of September 2019, runners taking part in the Sri Chinmoy Oneness-Home Peace Run passed through Cathedral Peak Hotel, taking the Peace Torch on a journey to all 44 nations in the Southern Hemisphere to encourage peace and harmony.

A plaque was unveiled at the Hotel dedicating the Maloti-Drakensberg Park to the cause of peace and international friendship and harmony. Other Peace Parks include Victoria Falls, the Great Barrier Marine Park, Mt Fuji, the Taj Mahal and Lake Baikal to name a few.

A Vibrant Celebration
of our Country’s Heritage

On Saturday the 21st and Monday 23rd September, our staff celebrated their heritage with traditional singing and dancing in the dining room for all our guests to enjoy. Traditional dinner buffet menus were designed and served by our Chef throughout the weekend. Guests and staff alike revelled in the beautiful expression of culture, and we hosted a selfie competition that saw our guests turning in some stunning photos for the chance to win amazing prizes.

A Vibrant Celebration
of our Country’s Heritage

When Albert van der Riet visited the area in the early 1900s, his imagination was captured by the beauty of the mountains, and the vibrant fauna and flora. As his eyes played over the valley, he saw a vision of a secluded hotel that would be closer to the mountains than any other hotel at the time.

After acquiring the land in mid 1930s, Albert set to work building a road to his new land, training local labourers, laying down infrastructure, and harvesting local stone and rock to build his hotel. The doors of the partially-completed 43-room hotel were opened in December 1939, and guests enjoyed guided walks through the ‘berg, horse rides, and evenings of dancing and entertainment in the hotel’s lounge.

As the world began to enjoy itself again after the end of World War II, the hotel really started to thrive. Albert and his growing family continued to build on his vision, expanding the hotel, adding new recreation facilities and improving the infrastructure. Cathedral Peak Hotel began attracting guests from all over the country and the world.

Upon Albert’s passing in 1987, the hotel stayed in the family, with the reins being taken up by his son, William.

Together with his wife, Belinda, they ensure that Albert’s glorious vision is still being kept alive in the grandest fashion. Their eldest son, Byron and his wife, Samantha have joined the fold, and are set to become the third generation of van der Riet Family to run the hotel.

Festive Season

Bookings for Christmas and New Year are filling up quickly, with
only a few spaces left during the holiday period.

The all-important visit by Santa will take place after a Carols By
Candlelight evening and Christmas morning will include a service
in the hotel’s chapel. The extravagant Christmas Day and New
Year’s Eve dinners are sure to be a highlight forming part of our
80th Birthday Celebrations.

Of course, the general programme of events will continue with free
daily guided walks, and access to the mountain bike trails, quad
bike rides, helicopter sight-seeing trips, horse & pony rides, mini
adventure golf and so much more for the whole family to enjoy.

Emmaus Hospital Visit

Guests, Evelyn Hartman and Jeannie Isobel, kindly donated clothing items to our local community. Our Assistant GM Rhine and HR Administrator Khethiwe went with these ladies to Emmaus Hospital to distribute the clothing to the children in various wards. We are truly grateful for all the donations and support we receive from our guests to assist those in need in our beautiful secluded valley.

Pack for a Purpose

Our environment is where we find our adventures, that’s why Cathedral Peak Hotel is committed to ensuring our remote, pristine, isolated valley and the communities that surround it are taken care of.

“It is in giving that we receive” – Francis of Assisi

Please join us these Holidays by finding a little extra space in your bag for some sorely-needed supplies to enable us to share the Festive spirit. The Pack for a Purpose project will benefit children from preschool through high school, from ages 3 through 18 years old, living in the valley leading to the Hotel. We hope to uplift local schools and provide them with the appropriate equipment and tools needed in their schooling environments.
