75 Years Cathedral Peak Hotel
Cathedral Peak Hotel Discover a paradise of fresh mountain air and exquisite surroundings. Cathedral Peak is renowned for its natural beauty and this award-winning Hotel is celebrating its 75th birthday this year. From its cosy setting in a quiet valley, visitors look out onto a jagged ridge of mountains known as the Cathedral Spur; the escarpment looms above the Hotel to the South and West.
Since 1939 the van der Riet family has offered guests warm hospitality, quality and value for money. The lure of the great outdoors combined with the Hotel's many facilities brings families and friends back for holidays, time and again. This 4* Hotel exists through the vision of one man – Albert van der Riet – who set about giving life to his vision in the 1930’s – building a road, installing water, laying infrastructure and employing local families, many of whom continue their links with the Hotel.
The Hotel welcomed its first visitors at Christmas 1939. On Albert’s death, the reins were taken up by his son, William, who, together with his wife Belinda, runs the Hotel today. William’s eldest son Byron is completing his in-service training whilst waiting in the wings – set to become the next generation of the van der Riet family to run Cathedral Peak Hotel. Now guests are accommodated in 104 spacious inter-leading family rooms, superior rooms and private Honeymoon Suites.
The exclusive Presidential Suite offers the ultimate in luxury accommodation boasting electric curtains, a fire place, full DSTV, two televisions, spa bath, steam shower, air-conditioning, and private golf cart. All Hotel rooms provide tea/coffee making facilities, heaters, fans, telephones, televisions and en-suite bathrooms with both bath and shower. An exclusive conference facility offers multi-variable seating for up to 200 delegates in a choice of 5 venues. The charming stone-and-thatch chapel with its magnificent view is the perfect setting for a memorable wedding, hosting up to 120 guests.
When the mountain peaks bask in the last rays of late afternoon sunshine, enjoy sundowners in the comfort of Albert's Cocktail Bar, a friendly meeting place; or relax with the family and watch evening descend on the valley from the Hotel patio. The elegant dining-room offers an extensive buffet and superb cuisine, personally supervised by the Hotel's top class chef.
After dinner, enjoy a game of darts or pool or watch sport on the big screen at the well-known late night Harry's Bar, where friends gather around a roaring log fire. Hotel guests can enjoy a host of sports activities, including cold swimming pool and heated splash and paddling pools, tennis, squash, horse and pony rides, trout fishing, bowls, floodlit mini-golf, volleyball, archery, quad bikes, mountain bike trails (bikes for hire), gym with steam room and a leisurely game of golf on our scenic nine-hole golf course (with alternate tees for an 18 hole game). Helicopter sightseeing tours and transfers are available by arrangement. The climbing tower is a great alternative for corporate team building challenges as well as family fun.
The in-house entertainment team will keep children and adults alike busy during peak season, with activities ranging from cupcake decorating for the children to a mini Olympic challenge, action cricket, movie and popcorn night and much more. The history of the San people lives on in the well-preserved Bushman paintings found in the nearby foothills.
Doreen Falls is picturesque in its natural beauty, while the Rainbow Gorge features a spectacular mist of water droplets which creates a colourful rainbow effect - and offers cooling refreshment to passers-by! For the serious hiker, why not challenge yourself to Cathedral Peak - a 9-10 hour return hike will see you summit 3100m at the peak of Cathedral! The Hotel offers FREE daily guided hikes, with knowledgeable and friendly guides.
